STEM CAMP
ST. JAMES JROTC ATTENDS “STEM” CAMP

While most students were enjoying their summer vacation away from a classroom environment, seven JROTC cadets from St. James High School were attending a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education program on the beautiful campus of Mississippi State University. From June 27 through July 1, 2011 the cadets participated in a wonderful educational opportunity. They were exposed to the college atmosphere, STEM curriculum and campus related work sites. The ultimate goals of the camp was to inspire the cadets to strive for excellence in all STEM areas, continue their education beyond high school and pursue STEM related career opportunities. Students also participated in physical fitness, hands-on projects, team building, self awareness activities and experiments.

The criteria for attendance was the following: be in good standing in the JROTC program and recommended by the Senior Army Instructor, be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior with solid academic credential as demonstrated by having a minimum GPA of 2.5 on 4.0 scale, be of strong moral and ethical character. A total of 7 students participated from St. James High; D’Ara Pillette, Javan Roussell, Na’Kiya Antonio, Kamrie Dillard, Michael Keller, Ariel Armour and Erwin Simmons. According to the cadets STEM Camp was provided an excellent opportunity to interact with students from across the state of Louisiana. They were exposed to career opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology and Engineering. The highlight of the camp was a group project where cadets were challenged to construct a “rocket” and launch it! While most successfully completed the task some failed but the overall experience was “priceless!”
